For I, Jehovah, Change Not

In Mal.3:6 we read, “For I, Jehovah, change not; therefore ye, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed.” James affirms the same fact about God, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.” There is great comfort to know this about the God we serve, but it is a very sober warning also. We can “bank” on God all the days of our lives. Men can and do let us down from time to time. Yet God is there to help us when we have those times of need. “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” Heb.4:15-16. When we face the shadow of death, God is there. “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” Ps.23:4. So in the tough times of life, it is comforting to trust in the living God that never changes. Yet this fact about God that never changes is also scary and sobering to think about. Every warning He has given, every example of his judgment upon sin and rebellion, we can “bank”on this also to come to pass. Peter says, “For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment;if he did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven others, when he brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly.” 2 Pet.2:4-5. He spared them not because of sin, nor will He spare us not because of sin and rebellion, He is Jehovah, He changes not beloved. Let us take heed and let us take comfort.
