Doing the Impossible

Lewis Carroll, an author, wrote in one of his stories, “One can’t believe impossible things. I dare say you haven’t had much practice, said the Queen. When I was your age, I always did it for half-an-hour a day. Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.”  We serve and worship a God who does the impossible as a matter of routine (Mt. 17:20; 19:26; Lk. 1:37; 18:27).

God’s inspired word is full of historical events where God did the impossible.  Creating something out of nothing (Gen. 1:1ff) was impossible, but God did it.  Having a nation of people who had been slaves for almost 400 years to cross over a sea bed on dry ground was impossible, but God did it (Ex. 14:21).  Manna was sent as food for the children of Israel for almost forty years.    Six days every week this occurred with enough on the sixth day to cover the seventh day seemed impossible, but God did it (Ex. 16: 14-35). A donkey speaking to a man is impossible, but God did it (Num. 22:13-35).  The sun and moon standing still without consequence is impossible, but God did it (Jos. 10:12-14).  A borrowed iron ax head made to swim is impossible, but God did it (2 Kgs. 6:5-7).  Elisha’s bones reviving a dead man is impossible, but God did it (2 Kgs. 13:21).  Men being saved from a fiery furnace with temperature so high that it killed those standing by and a man surviving being thrown into a lion’s den is impossible, but God did it (Dan. 3, 6).

On and on the list goes, with many more throughout the Old Testament and miracles just as shocking are revealed throughout the New Testament.  However the greatest miracle, the most impossible thing God has done, is given us the opportunity to spend an eternity with Him.  Through the blood of His Son, God makes us perfect, He cleanses us and gives us a body that is impossible, but God is doing it. Why?  Because, He loves us!  He takes us with all of our baggage and trash and makes us clean.  No matter how dirty or despicable, God does the impossible for us.  What He offers is the impossible gift made possible because of His love.  “With Godnothing is impossible” except for those whose hearts are so hardened they refuse to obey Him and accept His most gracious gift (Heb. 6:4).  God be glorified for doing the impossible—saving Christians!
